Root canals

Treat an infected tooth and keep it.

What it is

When the inside of a tooth is infected or badly damaged, a root canal cleans it out and seals it so you may be able to keep the tooth.

Who it is for

  • You have a strong or lasting toothache
  • A tooth is very sensitive to heat or cold
  • You have swelling near a tooth

What to expect

  1. The dentist assesses the tooth, an x-ray may be needed
  2. The inside of the tooth is cleaned
  3. The tooth is sealed, often with a crown later

Common questions

Is it painful?

The area is numbed first, so the treatment itself should not be painful.

Will I need more than one visit?

It can take more than one. The dentist will explain after assessing your tooth.
